FAM & Furious Friday Night Football
Georgia State Panthers @ Memphis Tigers
Georgia State Panthers (1-1) @ Memphis Tigers (1-1) — Memphis -27
6:00 PM CT
Last week saw both teams enter week two 1-0 after some FCS play (GSU barely survived their tangle with Kennesaw State), and promptly lose in disappointing efforts. The Panthers were throttled by NC State, while Memphis entered as a touchdown favorite over Navy and fell 22-21 in a rain soaked skirmish that favored the Academy’s ground game. Memphis’s RB Darrell Henderson slashed through Navy en route to 212 yards and three scores on just 16 carries, however the passing game struggled behind ASU transfer Brady White. This match-up is thus a key game for both teams; one must show a pulse, the other must show a passing game with some punch.
We expect Memphis to ride Henderson early, a 5-9 200-pound cannonball, who showed all kinds of explosion last year in the Tiger spread and has carried that burst into 2018 where he has 288 yards on just 22 carries, scoring four times. However the GSU defense has only allowed just 288 yards to both opposing teams combined at a 3.5 YPC clip. Thus the onus might be on Coach Norvell at Memphis to get White clicking. He brought the former star recruit and backup from Tempe for him to flourish in a familiar scheme, and this might be the game to showcase his knowledge and passing skills. The weather shouldn’t be an issue that far inland, so expect clear skies for him to take for the air if needed.
We think Henderson still carries the day, breaking 150 and two scores in a 33-6 win. Keep an eye on the electric runner and MJD-clone who could prove one of the country’s more underrated backs. His top gear is a thing of beauty.
