It’s no secret that we here at FAM love us some college football. It’s what brought us all together, after all. And since we’re just over a month away from it’s glorious return, we thought we’d start to clue you in on some of college football’s best and brightest who we expect to both break out and, well, keep doin’ what they do in 2017.
Next in our college football player spotlights, Florida State’s dynamic DB, Derwin James.
James comes into 2017 touted as one of the most versatile defensive players in the country. The nominal safety saw action in a variety of defensive backfield positions, and even dropped down into a hybrid linebacker role, and edge rusher during his freshman season. After demonstrating his explosive game changing ability in the Seminoles’ 2016 opener against Ole Miss, James was lost for the season with a knee injury in the following week.
Now, with James cleared to return, Seminole faithful have spent the offseason scouring social media for signs that his freakish athletic ability was not impaired. After a spring game that saw him perform as a one-man wrecking crew, it’s safe to say expectations are not going to be dampened by the injury.
With a week one opener against #1 Alabama, Derwin James will have a national showcase in which to breakout early. While all eyes are on him, and many expect great things, it’s important to remember that he has only played one full season – his true freshman year – and despite some impressive highlights, both on and off the field, much of James’ reputation is still hype. For the Seminoles to have a chance against a Crimson Tide team that demolishes high level competition in season openers, James will need to live up to that hype and be a true gamebreaker. With a defensive that seems intent on letting him be the focal point, he should get his opportunity.
